Student Awards of Merit

The pursuit of excellence is tantamount to a search for a high degree of quality in all things. With this philosophy comes certain fundamental values. In the context of the profession of engineering which you are pursuing, this means competence, responsibility, a sense of ethics and social commitment.

The Student Award of Merit aims to recognize the regard for excellence demonstrated by certain engineering students, members of the Student Section of the Order, whose academic results and commitment to society and their community are a testament to the values of the profession. In 2020, three Student Awards of Merit will be awarded to undergraduate students ($7,500, $5,000 and $3,000), as well as one graduate-level Student Award of Merit ($7,500) and one postgraduate Student Award of Merit ($7,500).

Student Award of Merit – Undergraduate

Eligibility criteria:

At the time the application is submitted, the candidate must:

  • Have completed the scholarship application form;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Be a member of the Student Section of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec;
  • Be enrolled in a full-time engineering program at a school or faculty in Québec that is recognized by the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec as giving access to the permit issued by the OIQ (see Appendix A at the bottom of this page to view the list of degrees and educational establishments recognized by the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec);
  • Previous Student Award of Merit recipients may not reapply.

Submission of application

To submit your application, you must be a member of the Student Section of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. If you have not yet registered, it’s easy, fast and free. Click here. Once you have your Student Section member number, simply fill out our online form.

The application deadline is November 30, 2019. All candidates who submit a complete application will receive a response. For information, contact us at 183 FOIQ FOIQ (1 833 647-3647).

Required documents:

  • The application form, duly completed and signed;
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency;
  • Proof of enrollment in a full-time engineering program at a school or faculty in Québec that is recognized by the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec as giving access to the permit issued by the OIQ;
  • Text describing a project carried out over the course of your studies that illustrates your leadership qualities and sense of professionalism;
  • Curriculum vitæ (including jobs held and extracurricular activities);
  • A letter of support written by a third party;
  • Transcript from your last year of CEGEP indicating your final R Score;
  • Recent transcript of the grades obtained in your engineering program and, if applicable, grades obtained in other university programs of study.

Award amount

During an official ceremony, the three undergraduate scholarship recipients will receive financial prizes of $7,500, $5,000 and $3,000 respectively, as well as a plaque commemorating their award. The payment will be made in two installments: 75% upon receipt of the award, 25% after registration for the membership roll of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. Recipients have a maximum of 5 years from the date on which the award is presented to them to claim the balance of their award.

Selection process

Each application will be evaluated according to the fundamental values of the profession, including competency, responsibility, sense of ethics and social commitment.

Four criterias will be examined:

  • 40% - Quality of the academic record
  • 25% - Leadership, involvement social commitment
  • 20% - Professionalism: leadership, initiative, ability to work in a team, respect for others, integrity, ethics, creativity, problem solving, likes a job well done, listening; qualities highlighted in the text presented and in the letter of recommendation
  • 15% - Quality of the language and presentation of the application for the Prize

At each university, one finalist is selected by a jury. A provincial jury then selects the three award recipients.

Additional information

The application must be submitted in its entirety; no documents will be accepted after the deadline has passed.

  • Faxes, emails and Internet transcripts will not be accepted;
  • Selected candidates must prove that they are Quebec residents. The address that appears on the transcript is sufficient proof;
  • Recipients of a Student Award of Merit may not apply for the award a second time;
  • Exam results must be available at the time of application;
  • The Foundation of the OIQ reserves the right not to award the prize.

Student Award of Merit – Graduate and Postgraduate

Criteria:

The Student Awards of Merit awarded to graduate and postgraduate students aims to recognize the regard for excellence demonstrated by certain engineering students, members of the Student Section of the Order, whose academic results and commitment to society and their community are a testament to the values of the profession.

The two recipients must prove that their principal place of residence was in Quebec at the time of application. They must provide a photograph for publication purposes.

Application for the graduate-level Student Award of Merit

Submission of application

To submit your application, log into the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec portal with your member number or Student Section member number. From the left menu, select Student Award of Merit - Graduate and fill out the online form.

The amount of the graduate-level Student Award of Merit is $7,500. The prize is awarded along with a plaque at an official reception of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec.

The payment will be made in two installments, 75% upon receipt of the award, 25% after registration for the membership roll of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. Recipients have a maximum of 5 years from the date on which the award is presented to them to claim the balance of their award.

If the recipient is already a member of the OIQ the payment will be made in a single installment when the prize is awarded.

  • Be enrolled as a full-time student in a recognized graduate engineering program (Master’s or D.E.S.S.);
  • Be a member of the Student Section - Graduate - of the OIQ (having completed a bachelor of engineering at a Quebec university) or a full member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec;
  • Have completed a minimum of two semesters in the program of study;
  • The program of study must include the submission of a thesis or dissertation.

Required documents

  • The application form, duly completed and signed;
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency;
  • Proof of enrollment in a full-time graduate-level engineering program;
  • Text describing the problem and objectives of the project leading to the development of a dissertation or Master’s report, the methodology and timeline anticipated as well as the contribution to the field of study, the practice of engineering and society as a whole;
  • Detailed curriculum vitæ;
  • A letter of support written by a professor in the program;
  • Official transcript from your undergraduate engineering program;
  • Official transcript from your current program.

  • Proof of enrollment in a full-time postgraduate-level engineering program;
  • Text describing the problem and research objectives, methodology and timeline anticipated as well as the progress achieved in the field of study, the practice of engineering and society as a whole;
  • Detailed curriculum vitæ;
  • A letter of support written by the research supervisor highlighting the candidate’s depth of scientific knowledge, rigor of their approach, quality of their scientific communications, commitment and ability to work in a team;
  • Official transcript from the candidate’s undergraduate engineering program;
  • Official transcript from the candidate’s graduate-level program if applicable, as well as from the current program of study.
